National Wellness Month: A Gentle Reminder to Parents—You Deserve Care Too by Shaquana Smith, LPGC

August is National Wellness Month, and if you're a parent, you might already be laughing at the idea of finding time for "wellness."
As both a therapist and a parent, I understand that wellness can sometimes feel like just another task added to an already overflowing to-do list. Between work, school schedules, doctor's appointments, sports practices, meal planning, laundry, and trying to remember where everyone's water bottle disappeared to, it can feel impossible to
prioritize yourself.
Wellness Doesn't Have to Be Expensive or Perfect
Social media often makes wellness look like spa weekends, luxury vacations, or waking up at 5 a.m. to meditate while drinking green juice. Real life isn't always like that.
Sometimes wellness looks like:
Drinking your coffee while it's still warm.
Taking five deep breaths before walking into the house after work.
Saying "no" to one extra commitment.
Sitting outside for ten quiet minutes.
Listening to your favorite music on the drive home.
Going to bed instead of folding that last basket of laundry.
Small moments count.
Being a parent is one of the most meaningful roles we can have, but it is also one of the most emotionally demanding.
As someone who sits on both sides—as a therapist and as a parent—I know firsthand that we often give our best to everyone else while leaving ourselves with whatever energy remains.
This National Wellness Month, I hope you'll remember that caring for yourself isn't taking away from your family. It's investing in them. A healthier, calmer, and more emotionally grounded parent creates a healthier, calmer, and more emotionally grounded home.
